LOWELL, Mass. -- Peter Wolstenholme doubled home the only run of the game in the fifth inning and Tim Manton did not allow a run in 8 1/3 innings to lead the UMass Lowell baseball team to a 1-0 non-conference win over University of New Haven on Monday night at LeLacheur Park.

UMass Lowell (20-17) prevailed over New Haven (17-19) in a non-traditional pitchers' duel - with Manton scattering seven hits and three walks over 8 1/3 innings while UNH used five pitchers to allow just seven hits.

Mark Sakelakos picked up his second save this season with 2/3 innings of relief for UML, getting out of a two-on jam in the ninth inning by inducing a fielder's choice grounder and a groundout to first base.

Both teams had plenty of chances to score, with UML stranding 11 runners and New Haven leading seven on base.  UNH had men on in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings, but could not push a run across against Manton.

The Chargers' best chance to score came in the second, when Jimmy Rivas singled up the middle, moved to second base on a groundout, and then rounded third on a single by Adam Rozum.  But Rivas was thrown out by UML left fielder Sean Burns while trying to score.

UNH starter Mitch Rossi did not allow a run in three innings of work for UNH, while Alex Smith (1/3), Brendan Burke (2/3) and Dan Johnson (1) combined for two innings of scoreless relief.

UML's only run came off Vince Lehman, who lasted three innings but gave up the run in the fifth.  Clohosey walked with one away, and Manton followed with a single to left.  Wolstenholme then doubled down the right field line to make it a 1-0 game.  After a walk to Burns, Lehman got himself out of the inning with a foul out to catcher Michael Moras and a fly out to center field.

After leaving men on second base in the sixth and seventh, UNH looked to tie in the ninth.  Rivas singled to right to lead off the frame, and moved to second on a walk by Moras.

UML chose to bring Sakelakos in to finish the game.  Rivas got to third after a fielder's choice groundout by Tom Ballaro, but Sakelakos closed out the game by getting Rozum to ground out to first base.

UNH plays at ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., and then has a three game series with C.W. Post on Friday (away, 3:30) and Saturday (home doubleheader, 12:00).
