WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- UNH scored three runs in their last at-bat in both games on Sunday, sweeping Merrimack College in a non-conference doubleheader at Warrior Field. UNH took the opener, 5-4, and then won the nightcap 6-3 in eight innings.
UNH is now 20-16 overall while Merrimack falls to 8-20.
Courtney Garland drove in three runs in the second game, while Nicole Downs homered to lead off the eighth inning for what would become the game-winning run. In the opening game, Jordanna Borska (photo) doubled to center field to start a 3-run rally in the seventh that gave UNH the win.
UNH resumes East Coast Conference play on Tuesday, April 22 at Mercy College and then hosts back-to-back doubleheaders at home to close out the season - Wednesday, April 23 vs. Assumption College and Friday, April 25 vs. Dowling College.
GAME ONE - UNH 5, Merrimack 4
Borska doubled to center field to plate the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning, capping off a three-run rally that helped UNH to a 5-4 win in the opening game on Sunday. Borska was one of five players to drive in a run for UNH, which rallied from a 4-2 deficit with the 3-run seventh inning. Breanne Gleason, Nicole Downs, Borska and Lizzy Robinson each drove in a run for UNH.
Hannah Everson picked up the victory with 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out three.
GAME TWO - UNH 6, Merrimack 3 (8 innings)
Again it was a three-run final at-bat that won the game for the Chargers, this time breaking open a game that Merrimack had tied in the bottom of the seventh to send the contest to extra innings.
Breanne Gleason got the win with 11 strikeouts in eight innings, allowing nine hits and one walk. Courtney Garland drove in three runs, while Lizzy Robinson, Nicole Downs (3-for-3) and Samantha Minervini each had one RBI for UNH.
In the seventh, Merrimack tied the game with a leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt and a two-out RBI single to left field.
But in the eighth, Downs led off with a homer to left field and Borska followed with a single to shortstop to force a pitching change. Minervini then singled to left, and Garland hit a sac fly to center. Robinson closed out the scoring with an RBI single to left, and Gleason closed out the game with a scoreless eighth inning.
