MANCHESTER, N.H. -- An overtime goal from Ashley Ferrandiz (photo) with 51 seconds left in overtime lifted the University of New Haven women's lacrosse team to an 18-17 victory over Saint Anselm College. Brigid Brady led the Chargers with seven goals on the afternoon.
The win marks the second consecutive come from behind one-goal victory for UNH. In Friday's match they defeated Merrimack, 20-19 after trailing by as many as seven. The Chargers (13-2, 3-2 ECC) have now won five matches in a row. UNH has two games remaining on the schedule against Bentley College and Philadelphia University.
UNH trailed by four goals just six minutes into the match, their largest deficit. But three consecutive goals from attacker Sarah LeGoff (5g, 1a) in a four minute span would put the Chargers within one at 5-4. St. Anselm responded with a run of their own, scoring four of the game's next five goals, two coming from Courtney Ford.
The Chargers would slowly climb back into the match with two strikes from Kristine Lambracht and one goal each from LeGoff and Brady. Heading into halftime UNH trailed 12-9.
Four minutes into the second frame the Chargers found themselves in a tie game thanks to two goals from Ashley Ferrandiz to open the period followed by Brady's fourth goal of the match. Ford, who tied with Brady for a game-high seven goals, would continue to punish the Chargers with two consecutives goals for the Eagles.
The turning point of the match would prove to be Brady's three straight goals in the middle of the second period. Following an unassisted effort at the 23:19 mark, Brady would put home two free position shots to give UNH their first lead of the match at 15-14.
Saint Anselm would respond after giving up the lead by scoring three of the next five goals, including two in the final four minutes to tie the match. Neither team could break the deadlock at 17-17 so the mach headed to overtime.
Freshman Ashley Ferrandiz (3g, 1a) tallied an unassisted goal with 51 seconds remaining in the first overtime period. UNH held on for the next four minutes to record their ninth win in ten matches. The goal was Ferrandiz's fifth game-winner of the season.
Up next for the Chargers lacrosse team is Senior Day on Thursday afternoon as UNH takes on Bentley College at 4:00 p.m. on Kayo Field.
