WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- The University of New Haven softball team took two East Coast Conference games from visiting Concordia College (N.Y.) on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers won by scores of 1-0 and 11-2.  With the wins, UNH moves to 18-16, 9-7 ECC.  The Clippers fall to 7-19, 3-13 ECC.

On Sunday UNH travels to Merrimack for a doubleheader beginning at noon.  The next home game for the Chargers is a doubleheader versus Assumption next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Game One: UNH 1, Corcordia 0

The Chargers edged past Concordia in game one thanks to a two-out RBI single from Jess Medina (photo) in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Junior Meg Brown went the distance for UNH in the shutout.  UNH climbed past the .500 mark with the win.

Despite giving up six hits and five walks in seven innings of work, Brown did not allow a run to score.  The UNH defense played a large role in keeping Concordia scoreless.  They turned three double plays in the first four innings.  In the third and fourth, Brown was able to get out of consecutive bases-loaded jams with inning ending double play groundouts.

The UNH bats were quiet for most of the day as Clipper starting pticher Alexa Rosella allowed only two hits while walking five on the afternoon.  Courtney Garland (1-1, BB) and Medina (1-3, RBI) accounted for the only two Charger hits, with Medina's proving to be the game-winner.

Breanne Gleason led of the crucial inning for UNH with a groundout to the shortstop.  Sophomore Nicole Downs reached base following a walk.  Chelsea Harold stepped in to pinch run and promptly stole second after catcher Jordanna Borska popped out.  Then with two outs, Medina stepped in to knock in the winning run.  Brown closed out the top of the seventh to preserve the narrow victory for UNH.

Game Two: UNH 11, Concordia 2 (5 innings)

The Charger bats came alive in game two as UNH racked up 16hits in the 11-2 win.  Jess Medina drove in four runs and six Chargers tallied multiple hits in game two.  Also carrying the Charger offense were Breanne Gleason (3-3, 3 R, 1 RBI) and lead-off hitter Meg Walter (2-3, 2 R).

Starting pitcher Gleason went four innings for UNH, allowing no hits.  Clipper Kelly Moran drew a walk against Gleason, the only baserunner in the first four innings for Concordia.

UNH jumped out to an early two run lead in the bottom of the first.  Jess Medina drove in her first two runs of the game following back-to-back lead-off singles by Walter and Gleason.  The Chargers would tack on three more runs in the third thanks to RBI singles from Medina, Meg Brown and Sam Minervini.

In the bottom of the fifth, UNH would break the game wide open with three more runs leading to an 8-0 advantage.  Gleason knocked in a run a  bunt single to the pitcher.  RBI singles from Gleason and Jordanna Borska coupled with a sac fly from Nicole Downs put the Chargers comfortably ahead 8-0.

The Clippers would score two runs in the top of the fourth off of UNH pitcher Hannah Everson, but UNH would quickly answer with three runs to end the game on the eight-run rule.  Everson ended the game with a two-out two RBI double to center field, scoring Lizzy Robinson and Amber Tolifero.
