WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Freshman Tom Rombilus (photo) finished 4-for-6 with three RBI's and five other players logged two or more hits to help power the University of New Haven baseball team to a 9-1 win over Post University at Frank Vieira Field on Thursday afternoon.
Rombilus, a freshman hitting .331 this season, logged career highs in both hits and RBI's to help UNH (16-16) avenge a loss to Post (11-21) last week. Evan Okon doubled and tripled and Kyle Bombace went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Kyle Donnelly (2-5), Michael Moras (2-5) and Dan Rosa (2-4) also had multiple hits for the Chargers.
On the mound, Mike Aquilino allowed just one run in 5 2/3 innings, striking out four to improve to 4-1 in his freshman campaign. Brendan Burke, T.J. Phelan, Matt Sommo and Mitch Rossi held the Eagles scoreless over the final 3 1/3 innings.
Jim Conto was the only Eagles player with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI.
UNH took an early 2-0 lead after single runs in the second and third innings. Rombilus singled home a run in the second and Jimmy Rivas singled in the second run of the day.
Post cut the lead to 2-1 after Conto singled to center field in the fourth. But six outs later, in the bottom of the fifth, UNH got three runs to put the game away.
Two walks set up a first-and-third situation for Rosa, who singled to make it 3-1 UNH. Another run scored on a throwing error at second base, and the third came after a Rombilus double down the left field line.
The Chargers got two more runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Rombilus singled home Bombace in the seventh, and then scored on Donnelly's single to center field. In the eighth, Rivas walked and pinch runner Bobby Wilcher later scored after a Cesar Garrido grounder to third. Caught in a rundown, Wilcher went to the ground to avoid the tag of the Post catcher, but stayed in the base line and quickly got up to scramble home. The final run crossed on an RBI fielder's choice grounder by Bombace.
UNH returns to East Coast Conference play on Saturday at home vs. St. Thomas Aquinas, with the doubleheader beginning at noon.
