Box Score - Game One / Box Score - Game Two

LOWELL, Mass. – Meg Brown (photo) struck out seven in a complete game effort and Meghan Walter and Courtney Garland drove in two runs apiece to help the University of New Haven softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with UMass Lowell on Wednesday afternoon at River View Field.  UNH took the opening game 9-1 but lost a hard-fought nightcap, 2-0.

UNH is now 16-16 overall while UML is 18-12.

UNH resumes East Coast Conference play on Saturday at home vs. Concordia College (N.Y.) and play at Merrimack College on Sunday.

GAME ONE - UNH 9, UMass Lowell 1

In the opener, UNH scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back as Jordanna Borska, Brown and freshman Samantha Minvervini each had RBI singles to lead the way for the Chargers.

UML pulled one back in the fourth inning off a sacrifice fly from Stacey Lajoie, but the Chargers added one in the sixth when Garland doubled and scored on a groundout.

New Haven erupted for four more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single by Garland, to move out to a 9-1 lead.

Minervini finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Garland went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI's. Walter drove in two runs with a 2-for-4 performance, and Breanne Gleason went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

Hilary Hopkins led UML with a 2-for-3 game.

Brown earned the win for New Haven, scattering five hits, two walks and one earned run while striking out seven to improve to 8-6.  Lindsay Farmer took the loss, allowing 15 hits, nine runs (eight earned) and three walks while striking out four to slip to 8-6.

GAME TWO - UMass Lowell 2, UNH 0

In the nightcap, the River Hawks mustered just two hits, but took advantage of a throwing error with two out in the sixth inning to score two runs and eke out the win. Nicole Monroe allowed seven hits and no walks while striking out two in her first career shutout.

Gleason took the hard-luck loss despite pitching a gem, giving up two hits, two unearned runs and three walks while striking out four to slip to 7-9.

Walter and Nicole Downs each batted 2-for-3 to lead New Haven.

With two out in the sixth inning, Heather Ross singled and Stephanie Rollo was hit by a pitch. Emily Wolf, pinch hitting for Gina Angelone, reached first on a throwing error, enabling Ross and Rollo to score.
