WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Freshman second baseman Courtney Garland (photo) drove in four runs on a pair of doubles to lead the University of New Haven softball team to a 9-1 five-inning win over Molloy College in the second game of an East Coast Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Molloy won the opener, 6-1.
One of Garland's two 2-RBI doubles was a walk-off shot in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting UNH (15-15, 7-7 ECC) up by eight runs to shorten the victory over Molloy (17-17, 7-7 ECC).
UNH returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow, April 16 at UMass Lowell. They host Concordia (N.Y.) on Saturday and travel to Merrimack on Sunday.
GAME ONE - Molloy 6, UNH 1
Tiffany D'Alessandro and Florence Williams each drove in a pair of runs, and Molloy scored three times in both the fourth and seventh innings to score the victory.
Amanda Havdoglous allowed just one run in seven innings in the circle, striking out just two while giving up seven hits and five walks.
Meg Brown struck out eight but took the loss after giving up six runs on nine hits and three walks. Jordanna Borska was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and five other players had one hit apiece for the Chargers.
GAME TWO - UNH 9, Molloy 1 (5 innings)
Garland's four-RBI performance keyed the victory for UNH, which also got two RBI's apiece from pitcher Breanne Gleason and third baseman Jessica Medina. Chelsea Harold finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate.
Gleason struck out eight while allowing just three hits and four walks in five innings of work.
UNH scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the victory, including Garland's walk-off double with no outs in the fifth.
