WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Matt Kotuby scattered six hits and allowed just two runs in eight innings of work to lead the University of Bridgeport baseball team to a 6-2 East Coast Conference win over University of New Haven at Frank Vieira Field on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, Bridgeport takes the ECC series opener and improves to 11-10 overall and 9-6 in the ECC. UNH is now 15-16, 11-5. The teams continue the series with single games at Bridgeport on April 23 and 29.
Peter Barrows and Andres Albaladejo each collected two hits and drove in two runs to pace Bridgeport, while Seth Desautel and Mike Ferrara were each 2-for-4. Paul Ruiz-Rodriguez closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit.
For UNH, Jimmy Rivas drove in freshman Tom Rombilus (2-for-5) twice, with a long single in the first inning and a fielder's choice grounder in the eighth. Kyle Bombace was the only other Charger with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4.
Bridgeport took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third, then went on to plate single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh to put the game out of reach. Geatano Giunta tripled to deep left to start the third inning, then scored on a single by Mike Buswell. After a double by Mike Ferrara, Barrows doubled in a run and Albaladejo singled in a run to right.
Barrows later added an RBI single up the middle in the fifth, and Nate Leva drove in a tally with a single up the middle in the sixth. Albaladejo rounded out the UB scoring with a single through the left side in the seventh.
UNH is home three more times this week, beginning with a single game vs. Post University on Thursday at 3:30. They host St. Thomas Aquinas College in a doubleheader on Saturday at noon, and finish off that three-game set on Sunday at STAC beginning at 1:00 p.m.
