GARDEN CITY, N.Y. -- Matt Sommo (photo) and T.J. Phelan both pitched complete-game shutouts, and Evan Okon collected three hits, three runs and a pair of RBI's as the University of New Haven baseball team swept an East Coast Conference doubleheader from Adelphi University at Bonomo Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
First-place UNH captured game one, 2-0, and won the nightcap 3-0 to improve to 15-14 overall and 11-3 in the ECC. Adelphi is now 12-19, 5-9.
The teams will conclude the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field in West Haven beginning at 1:00 p.m.
GAME ONE - UNH 2, Adelphi 0
Matt Sommo spun a complete-game shutout, striking out seven to power the 2-0 win in the opener. Sommo allowed just three hits and gave up three walks and a hit-by-pitch while improving to 3-3 this season.
He out-dueled Bobby Lanigan, who lasted 7 2/3 innings and struck out eight. He gave up both of the Chargers' runs on four hits and a walk.
Offensively for the Chargers, Michael Moras and Tom Ballaro were both hitless but drove in the runs. Evan Okon scored both and was 2-for-3 at the plate. Kyle Donnelly also collected two hits.
Three different players had hits for Adelphi, with Rob DeGennaro the only Panther to be on base twice by adding a walk.
GAME TWO - UNH 3, Adelphi 0 (7 innings)
T.J. Phelan did not allow a run in a 7-inning complete-game shutout, scattering seven hits without a walk. He struck out seven and picked up his team-leading fourth win of the season.
Okon drove in two of UNH's three runs and scored the other, with Moras driving in the other run for the Chargers. Adam Rozum doubled and was 2-for-3 for UNH.
For AU, Ryan Boelsen was 2-for-3 and five other players had one hit each, but they again were unable to score.
UNH scored once in the first and twice in the second, and won despite being out-hit by a 7 to 5 margin.
