SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated American International on Wednesday afternoon 21-6, picking up their ninth win on the season. Ten different players scored for UNH, led by four goals from Brigid Brady and three goals apiece from Brianna Kenworthy and Ashley Ferrandiz (photo).
The ninth-ranked Chargers (9-2, 3-2 ECC) scored the first ten goals of the match on their way to the comfortable victory. UNH's 21 goals was the second-highest scoring mark this season for the team, behind a 22-goal effort to open the season versus Southern Connecticut.
Freshman Ashley Ferrandiz led UNH with six points, including a game-high three assists. The freshman trio of Carolina Marrero, Lisa Barnard and Nicole Van Leer had two goals apiece for the Chargers. In all, the four freshman accounted for nine of UNH's 21 goals.
American International (0-10, 0-5 NE-10) was led by midfielder Morgan Mastronardi who scored a team-high two goals for the Yellow Jackets. Katie Warner also had two assists for AIC.
In a dominating first half display, UNH racked up 13 goals from seven different players while out-shooting the Yellow Jackets 21-9. Despite AIC scoring four goals in a six minute span in the first half, UNH went to the halftime break ahead 13-4.
The second half was no different for UNH as they piled on the pressure, adding eight more goals on their way to the victory. Van Leer scored her first two collegiate goals on Wednesday. They both came in the final thirteen minutes.
Goalkeeper Shannon Greenwood picked up the victory, making nine saves in the winning effort.
Next up for the Chargers is a home date versus Franklin Pierce University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Kayo Field followed by another home game against Bryant University on Monday at 4:00 p.m.
