BROOKVILLE, N.Y. -- Samantha Yodowitz and Christina Berardi both pitched complete-game shutouts to lead the C.W. Post softball team past University of New Haven in East Coast Conference play on Tuesday afternoon. UNH dropped game one 3-0, and fell in the nightcap 4-0.
UNH falls to 9-13 overall and 2-6 in ECC play this season, while C.W. Post rises to 24-11, 9-1 and maintains control of first place in the league standings.
UNH continues play on the road with a doubleheader at Bentley College on Thursday and an ECC twinbill at St. Thomas Aquinas the following day. They host Queens College (N.Y.) on Saturday beginning at 1:00.
GAME ONE RECAP - C.W. Post 3, UNH 0
Samantha Yodowitz struck out 11 and allowed just two hits and one walk in shutting out UNH, 3-0, in the opener of an ECC doubleheader.
Yodowitz opened the game by striking out 9 of the first 12 batters she faced, whiffing the side in the first inning.
Meghan Walter doubled to lead off the fifth inning, and Nicole Downs singled to shortstop in the seventh and was hit by a pitch in the first.
But Yodowitz shut down the Chargers each time she put someone one, throwing back-to-back K's in the first after hitting Downs, getting three straight outs after Walter's double, and getting a pair of groundouts and a foul out to end the game following Downs's single.
Meg Brown went the distance in the circle for UNH, allowing three runs - two earned - on three hits and five walks. She struck out five in six innings of work.
CWP got on the board in the bottom of the first, using three straight walks to open the contest. They got an unearned run on an error by UNH's second baseman Courtney Garland on a throw from Jordanna Borska trying to complete a double-play.
The Pioneers broke open the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Brown walked Megan Correia and Katie Younes singled to right field. Brown then hit Katie Fisher with a pitch to load the bases, and Melissa Medina knocked a two-run single up the middle to cap the game's scoring.
GAME TWO - C.W. Post 4, UNH 0
Breanne Gleason and Meghan Walter had two hits each, and Gleason struck out nine batters in a six-inning complete game, but UNH could not score once again.
UNH logged seven hits in game two, but C.W. Post starter Christina Berardi still came away with the shutout. She struck out 10 and wallked just one, as UNH left runners on base in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings.
Gleason led off the game with a single, and Walter followed with a single on a bunt. One runner was erased on a fielder's choice, and then a foul out and a strike out ended the two-on threat.
In the third, Gleason singled with one out and Downs doubled with two outs, but a ground out to third ended the inning.
In the top of the fourth, Jessica Medina singled with one out and Samantha Minervini followed with a single of her own. But a strike out and a grounder to third ended another two-on possibility.
In the fifth, UNH left two again after Walter singled and Downs walked with one out. But a strike out and a liner to center ended that inning.
C.W. Post struck first with a single run in the bottom of the second inning. Melissa Hippo singled to lead off the inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice by Christy Softy. Eringis singled to left and moved all the way around to third on a rundown that erased Hippo, but Correia followed with a single up the middle to make it 1-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Softy hit a solo homer over the left field fence to make it 2-0. Eringis doubled in the next at-bat, and after a grounder moved her to third, she scored on a double to center field by Younes that made it 3-0.
In the sixth, Hippo homered to left center to finish off the scoring.
