BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. -- T.J. Phelan fired a seven-inning one-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader, powering the University of New Haven to a split with Dowling College in East Coast Conference baseball action on Saturday.  Dowling won the opener, 6-2, before Phelan helped UNH to a 4-0 win in the nightcap.

Phelan had a no-hitter going through 6 1/3 innings before giving out a single to David Wendt.  For UNH, Chad Lemos drove in three runs in the second game of the doubleheader, hitting his fourth homer of the season in the sixth inning.  Tom Rombilus had three hits in the second game, while Michael Moras had a three-hit opener and totaled four hits on the day.

UNH is now 11-13 overall and 7-3 in ECC play, atop the league standings.  Dowling stands at 14-10, 5-3.  Sunday's rubber match will be at UNH's Vieira Field beginning at 1:00 p.m., and fans can listen to the action live on the internet as well as follow along with live stats.

GAME ONE - Dowling 6, UNH 2 (9 innings)

Brent Lotito went the distance in game one for Dowling, scattering six hits and four walks while striking out two.  Dowling scored its runs late to take control, overturning what had been a 2-1 UNH lead through six-and-a-half innings.

UNH's Matt Sommo allowed four runs in 6 2/3, striking out five while walking six and giving up four hits.

After Dowling plated a run in the first, UNH got single tallies in both the second and third innings.  In the second, Dan Rosa hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Moras, while in the third it was an error by Lotito with bases loaded that plated Jimmy Rivas.

The game remained 2-1 UNH until the bottom of the seventh inning.  Sommo walked Frank Intagliata and Joel Duverge back-to-back to start the frame, then gave up an RBI single to Eddie Squeri to tie the game.  He did get Brian Ferguson to hit into a double play, scoring the go-ahead run, but then walked Kevin Reese and was lifted from the game.  Reliever Dan Johnson allowed an RBI single up the middle to give Dowling a 4-2 lead.

The Golden Lions added a pair of runs in the eighth inning, while UNH was unable to score.  The Chargers got two hits in the eighth inning, a pair of two-out singles by Moras and Lemos, but they were left on base after a fielder's choice at third.  In the ninth, Adam Rozum singled to right field to lead off but UNH stranded the runner with a fielder's choice and a double play.

GAME TWO - UNH 4, Dowling 0 (7 innings)

Phelan, who entered the game with an ERA of 8.72, allowed just three walks and one hit - a single with one out in the seventh inning.  He struck out three in picking up his second win of the season for the Chargers, helping UNH earn a crucial split to keep the Golden Lions a full game back of the UNH in the ECC standings.

Phelan did not allow a hit until a single by David Wendt with one out in the seventh inning.  He allowed one hit-by-pitch, in the first inning, but erased it on a double play.  He also gave up three walks.

Lemos was the hero offensively, driving in three runs on his fourth homer of the season in the top of the sixth inning.

UNH got all four of its runs in the top of the sixth, with Evan Okon adding a run-scoring single two at-bats before Lemos's 3-run shot.  Rombilus finished the game 3-for-3, the only player on either team with multiple hits.
