BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. -- Brigid Brady and Ashley Ferrandiz each scored four times to help the No. 9 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeat Dowling College, 13-9, on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, UNH establishes a new single-season record for team victories with eight regular-season matches still remaining on the schedule.
UNH, ranked ninth in Division II as of the latest IWLCA/Under Armour coaches' poll released on Monday, improves to 8-1 this season and sets up a showdown with No. 4 Adelphi University this Saturday at UNH's Kayo Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Brady added an assist for a game-high five points, while Mallory Ferrandiz had three goals and one assist for the Chargers. Sarah LeGoff and Heather Miles rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece, while Shannon Kilburn made three saves to pick up the victory in goal.
Dowling (4-3) got two goals from Cassandra Cronin and Pamela Mcgirr, while five other players scored once each.
UNH was in control from the opening draw, scoring the game's opening five goals, including two each by Brady and Ashley Ferrandiz. The Chargers led 12-6 with less than six minutes remaining before the Golden Lions scored four of the game's final five goals to pull to within the final margin of 13-9.
No. 4 Adelphi is 5-0, winning its last match on March 27 at St. Thomas Aquinas College. They have out-scored their opponents by a 96-39 margin this season and
UNH is ranked for the first time in program history after breaking through the seven-win plateau for the first time in the program's eight-year history. The Chargers' lone setback this season came at the hands of defending national champions and No. 1-ranked C.W. Post last week.
