BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Meg Brown struck out 10 batters and homered in support of herself to help the University of New Haven softball team to an East Coast Conference doubleheader split with University of Bridgeport at Seaside Park on Saturday.

Brown picked up the victory in the circle, going a complete game in the nightcap for UNH (7-9, 1-3 ECC).  Bridgeport is now 7-11, 2-2.

UNH continues ECC play on Sunday in West Haven, hosting New York Institute of Technology at 1:00 p.m.

GAME TWO - UNH 4, Bridgeport 1

Brown hit a solo home run in support of her own effort in the circle, where she struck out 10 in a complete-game effort for the victory.  Four different players drove in a run each, including Brown, whose solo home run in the seventh inning was the cap on the game.

UNH got three unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning to break the game open.  Courtney Garland reached on an error at first base, and Chelsea Harold reached on an error by the catcher while trying to sacrifice bunt.  That allowed Nicole Downs to drive in a run on a fielder's choice grounder, and two batters later Breanne Gleason drove in a run with a single.  Meghan Walter ended the spurt with an RBI single to make it 3-0 Chargers.

UB got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but Brown's home run in the seventh capped off the scoring.

Brown was feast-or-famine all day for the Chargers.  She struck out 10 but walked 11, allowing just three hits.  She pur runners on in every inning but the fifth, but was able to escape unscathed each time - save for a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.

GAME ONE - Bridgeport 2, UNH 0

UB's Steiner held UNH scoreless, striking out four while scattering six hits and allowing three walks.  The Chargers had plenty of opportunities, putting runners on base in all seven innings.

But they could not capitalize.  UNH left eight runners on base, and stranded a runner at third base in the first inning.  Walter doubled to lead off the game, but three straight outs left her standing on third as the inning ended.

It was more of the same in each successive inning, including the seventh, where Harold singled and stole second base and Walter reached on an error, but Brown hit into a game-ending double play.
