ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. -- Matt Sommo struck out six and allowed just one run in eight innings to help the University of New Haven to an East Coast Conference doubleheader split with Molloy College at Lions Field on Saturday.

Sommo won the day's opener by scattering six hits and three walks in eight innings.  Nick Sperounis drove in three runs and four other players logged an RBI as UNH prevailed, 8-1.

In the second game, Molloy exploded for four runs in the third and three more in the sixth as they ran away with an 11-2 decision.  Michael Moras hit a solo home run with two outs in the fourth inning for UNH.

The teams will conclude the three-game set on Sunday at UNH's Frank Vieira Field beginning at noon.

GAME ONE - UNH 8, Molloy 1

Sommo allowed just one run - in the eighth inning - while striking out six for his second victory of the season.  Ian Solomon closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning.

Offensively for the Chargers, five of their eight runs were unearned thanks to six errors by Molloy.  UNH went up 1-0 after the third inning, and led 3-0 after getting a pair in the fourth.  Kyle Donnelly doubled with two outs in the fourth and Sperounis drove in a pair of runs with a grounder to the left side.

UNH got two more unearned runs in the fifth thanks to errors at both short stop and first base, with Chad Lemos driving in a run on a double.

Evan Okon and Dan Rosa both doubled in runs in the eighth inning, while Sperounis drove in his third with a sacrifice fly to center field.

GAME TWO - Molloy 11, UNH 2 (7 innings)

T.J. Greig and Andrew Scavuzzo drove in three runs apiece to lead the Lions to the victory, while Chris Irwin had a pair of RBI's.  Molloy scored twice in the first and then blew the game open with a four-run third.  They added two more in the fourth, and three in the sixth.

Steven DeJesus held UNH to just five hits, and the Chargers committed three errors that led to three of the 11 runs given up.

Moras homered in the fourth inning with two outs to cut the lead to 6-1, and UNH got a sacrifice fly from Ken Appel in the seventh for their second score.
