WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Four goals from Sarah LeGoff and a career-high four assists from Mallory Ferrandiz led the University of New Haven women's lacrosse team to a convincing 18-6 ECC win over St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday afternoon at Kayo Field.
UNH (6-1, 2-1 ECC) had six players tally multiple goals on the afternoon. Fellow freshman Carolina Marrero and Ashley Ferrandiz scored three apiece while Kristine Lambracht, Brianna Kenworthy and Brigid Brady each added two goals in the victory.
In the losing effort, St. Thomas Aquinas (1-3, 0-2 ECC) was led by three goals from senior Aime Colon. Katelyn McDonagh also added two goals for the Spartans.
The Chargers jumped out to an early three goal lead after just five minutes. Two of those goals were from LeGoff (photo) who set the tone early for UNH.
Half way through the first period the Chargers found themselves with a 9-1 adavantage. Three goals from LeGoff, Kenworthy and Brady capped a run of six straight goals for UNH. STAC repsonded with two quick goals of their own to cut the defecit to 9-3, but the final result was never in question. UNH went to the break ahead 12-3. The last goal of the half was scored by Ashley Ferrandiz with an assist from her sister, Mallory.
UNH controlled the tempo in the second half with a large advantage in possession. The Chargers extended their lead to 18-4, their largest lead of the match, after freshman Lisa Barnard netted her first career goal with two minutes left to play. St. Thomas Aquinas grabbed two late goals to finish up the scoring on the afternoon.
On just 26 shots, the Chargers managed to shoot just short of 70 percent for the match. The 18 goals was their second highest output of the season behind a 22 goal outburst versus Southern Connecticut in the season opener.
Goalkeeper Shannon Kilburn made seven saves for the Chargers en route to her fifth win of the season.
The Chargers continue their season in just two days with a home non-conference match versus Assumption College at 4:00 p.m. this Monday.
