EASTON, Mass. -- The University of New Haven scored the game's final seven goals, including the game-winner by Sarah LeGoff by with just 39 seconds remaining, as the Chargers' women's lacrosse team shocked No. 3 Stonehill College 11-10 on Thursday afternoon.
UNH (5-1) had been receiving votes in this week's IWLCA Division II national poll and scored the upset over previously-unbeaten No. 3 Stonehill (3-1) by overcoming an 8-2 deficit early in the second half.
The Chargers used a balanced attack that featured five players with two goals. Brigid Brady, Kristine Lambracht and Mallory Ferrandiz all got their two goals off 8-meter shots, while LeGoff scored twice and saw her game-winner come on a free position shot as well. Ashley Ferrandiz scored twice, while Brianna Kenworthy added one goal.
UNH goalkeeper Shannon Kilburn played all 60 minutes, making seven saves in the victory.
Stonehill got three goals and one assist from Liza Gross, while Kristin Darrell and Michelle Kelly scored twice each.
UNH trailed 7-2 at halftime and saw Stonehill's Mary Maloney add an eighth goal just 33 seconds into the second half.
But after trading goals with Stonehill twice to make it a 10-4 game with 22:46 left, the Chargers got aggressive and took over. UNH scored the game's final seven goals, with four of them coming on 8-meter shots. Brady's second goal of the day on an 8-meter tied the contest at 10-all with 9:02 remaining.
The teams played scoreless for roughly the 8:23 before LeGoff was fouled in the circle. She put home her 8-meter opportunity to win the game for the Chargers.
UNH will now play twice in a row at home, beginning this Saturday vs. ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College at 1:00 p.m.
