WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Breanne Gleason (photo) tossed seven scoreless innings and homered in support of herself as the University of New Haven softball team opened a non-conference doubleheader with a 4-0 win over Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday.  SCSU took game two, 8-4.

GAME ONE - UNH 4, Southern Connecticut 0

Gleason tossed a three-hit shutout at the Owls in the opener, striking out six while completing the 7-inning game.  Chelsea Harold finished 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI's and a run scored.

Gleason also helped herself at the plate with a solo home run to left field leading off the fourth inning.  That was the start of a three-run outburst that blew open the 1-0 contest.  Also in the inning, Harold tripled in a pair of runs after Jordanna Borska singled and Carolyn Fruin walked.

UNH had led 1-0 after the third inning, getting a single from Harold, who then stole second and scored from there after a throwing error by the SCSU third baseman on a grounder by Meg Brown.

Nicole Downs finished the game 2-for-3.

GAME TWO - Southern Connecticut 8, UNH 4

Borska homered for the Chargers, but it was not enough as Southern had already scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning to blow the game open.

In the fourth, The Owls had a succession of long singles, four in a row, sandwiched by doubles off the bats of Christina Wolf and Megan Caporossi.  The Chargers replaced starter Hannah Everson with Gleason after the first double and single, but she could not stop the bleeding and allowed three straight singles and the inning's final double.  Meg Brown came in to relieve Gleason and got Brittany Gandley to stike out swinging to end the inning.

Borska's home came as the leadoff batter in the bottom of the fourth inning, and UNH put two more runners on, but a groundout on a bunt attempt ended the inning, leaving UNH down 7-1.

Brown closed out the game by striking out seven batters in 3 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on a Gandley homer in the top of the seventh.

The Chargers managed to plate three runs in the bottom of seventh following a two-out error.  With the bases loaded Gabby Cruz struck a double to the right field fence, scoring three for UNH.  But the rally would end with the next batter, earning SCSU the split.

The Chargers resume ECC play with a doubleheader versus the University of Bridgeport this Saturday.  Game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
