ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY. -- Three goals apiece from both Mallory Ferrandiz and Ashley Ferrandiz lifted the UNH women's lacrosse team to a 10-6 victory over Molloy College in their first East Coast Conference match of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers outscored Molloy 6-1 in the second half to complete the comback after trailing by one goal at halftime.
The victory means that UNH (4-0, 1-0 ECC) will be undefeated when they take on the nation's top-ranked team, C.W. Post, in the Chargers' home opener this Tuesday. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
Molloy drops to 3-2 (0-1 ECC). Rounding out the scoring for the Chargers with one goal each were Brigid Brady, Brianna Kenworthy, Carolina Marrero and Heather Miles.
Freshman Ashley Ferrandiz (photo) led all players with four points in the game and has now tallied 16 points (12 G, 4 A) in her first four collegiate matches.
Molloy was led by Kristina Wargo and Kristie Sosnowski who each scored twice. Attacker Erin Brady offered a pair of assists for the Lions in the losing effort.
Molloy jumped out to an early lead after a goal by Wargo at the 28:52 mark. But UNH would quickly answer by scoring three of the next four goals culminated by Mallory Ferrandiz's team leading eleventh goal on the season with just under 13 minutes to play in the first half.
But Molloy would do their best to stay in the match. They countered with three unanswered goals leading the Lions to a 5-3 advantage, their largest lead of the match. Just as the first half was about to come to a close, Mallory Ferrandiz got the Chargers to within one goal with a free position shot with just ten seconds remaining in the period.
Just two minutes into the second half the Chargers found themselves in the lead after tallies by Ashley Ferrandiz and Kenworthy, giving UNH a 6-5 lead. The entire half belonged to UNH as they finished the game by scoring six of the game's final seven goals.
Despite a goal by Molloy at the midway point of the second half, UNH would dominate the period en route to a four goal victory. Freshman Marrero capped the scoring on the day with her fifth goal of the season with just under eight minutes to play.
UNH out-shot Molloy 12-8 in the second half and 28-24 for the match. Charger goalkeeper Shannon Kilburn played the entire match in the net, making a season-high eight saves for her third victory of the season.
The Chargers continue ECC play on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. with their home opener versus C.W. Post, ranked 1st in the nation.
