ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The University of New Haven baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Belmont Abbey College on Tuesday at the U.S. Naval Academy's Max Bishop Stadium.  Belmont Abbey won the opener, 5-3, while UNH claimed the nightcap, 10-1.

UNH is now 3-9 this season while Belmont Abbey is 23-10.  The Chargers were led in the doubleheader by freshman Tom Rombilus, who finished 4-for-8 with four runs and a pair of RBI's.  Jimmy Rivas collected three hits and a pair of RBI's, while Nick Sperounis was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in during the second game.

UNH continues its swing southward with single games at Wilmington (Delaware) College on Wednesday and Thursday.  They open the East Coast Conference season at home this Saturday, March 22, with a noon doubleheader versus Mercy College.

GAME ONE - Belmont Abbey 5, UNH 3

UNH led the first game, 3-2, before Belmont Abbey got three runs in the fourth and fifth innings. 

In the top of the fourth, Abbey got a pair of unearned runs after a two-out error at first base allowed McKenzie to reach.  Atwell followed with an RBI double, and two batters later Castellanos hit an RBI single for the go-ahead run.

Abbey added a home run by Waller in the fifth.

UNH, meanwhile, put just three men on base in the final four innings.  They got a hit-by-pitch in the fifth, a single in the sixth and a walk in the seventh.

Dan Johnson struck out five while allowing just three earned runs in five innings for the Chargers, but fell to 0-1 on the season.

GAME TWO - UNH 10, Belmont Abbey 1

The Chargers' offense exploded for 13 hits and 10 runs in the nightcap, with Tom Rombilus and Nick Sperounis leading the way with a pair of RBI's each. 

The offense backed a strong outing by freshman Mike Aquilino, who allowed just one run while striking out three in six innings of work.  He allowed just four hits and two walks.

Rombilus was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a double, triple, walk and 2 RBI's to lead UNH.  Evan Okon was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs, while Greg Steele was 2-for-4 and scored twice.  Sperounis drove in two runs on a double in the first inning.

UNH got five of its 10 runs in the first inning, then added three more in the sixth.
