Game 1: Caldwell College 3, New Haven 0
The Chargers had a tough time at the plate against the Cougars in their first game of the day. Caldwell freshman pitcher Brittany Pulido held UNH to only two hits as she picked up her second win of the season.
The Cougars got out of the gate early, plating three runs in the bottom of the first as UNH starter Breanne Gleason started slowly. Lead-off hitter Nicole Bodrog reached first base after being hit by Gleason. After a sacrifice bunt, a single through the left side of the infield allowed Bodrog to come around to score. With a runner on second, catcher Brittni Frantellizzi tripled down the right field line knocking in the second run of the contest.
Caldwell was able to plate the third and final run of the contest as Frantellizzi crossed the plate on a delayed steal from third, as Cecilia Goforth stole second ahead of the throw giving the Cougars a 3-0 advantage.
UNH and Caldwell put up zeros in the run columns with no team threatening to score until the Chargers came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Nicole Downs reached first base after an error by the third baseman. Gleason followed it with a single, giving the Chargers some life in the final frame, with two on and no outs. But the comeback fell short as the Cougars got the Chargers to ground into a game-ending double play.
Gleason settled down in the circle the rest of the way allowing the Chargers to stay close in the game. Still in the losing effort she was able to limit the Cougar offense by dishing out seven strike outs against six hits.
Gleason and senior Denise Castelli were the only Chargers that collected hits in the game, both singles.
Game 2: William Woods University 8, New Haven 2
The Chargers were able to build a 2-0 lead over William Woods after two innings but could not hold onto the lead as they dropped to 2-4 on the season.
UNH starting pitcher Meg Brown got out of trouble early, but could not go the entire game as William Woods reeled off 5 runs in the fourth inning to take control. Brown loaded the bases in the top of the first but was able to get Shannon Huffman to strike out to end the inning.
Brown then led off the Charger bottom half of the inning with a triple to right field. With the next two batters collecting outs, junior catcher Jordanna Borska hit a two-out RBI single to left field to plate Brown and give UNH an early 1-0 lead.
In the next two innings, Brown looked in total control as she sat the William Woods batters down in order, with three strikeouts and only nine pitches in the top of the second. In the third, Brown struck out two more batters and the Charger pitcher looked dominant.
The Chargers were able to add their second run of the game in the bottom of the second as freshman secondbaseman Courtney Garland got her first collegiate hit with a double to left field. Junior Carolyn Fruin followed up with her first RBI of the season as she knocked in Garland with a single up the middle giving UNH a 2-0 margin.
William Woods was able to take control of the game though as they were able to plate five runs in the top of the fourth, leaving the Chargers in the Florida dust. Designated-hitter Chelsea Loethen started the rout with a single down the right field line. Huffman then drove a ball deep to center field to double and advance Loethen to third. Following a walk and a strike out, Kendra Propst singled to center driving in two runs and advancing to second base, to tie the game (2-2).
The next batter for William Woods lined out to third, but an infield single and a hit batter extended the inning. William Woods was able to add three more runs over the next two innnings to get to the final score of 8-2.
After struggling in the first game of the day, Downs did collect two hits against William Woods, as did Garland, as she had her best day as a Charger in her young career.
