WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Four different players scored twice in the second half as the University of New Haven women's lacrosse team scored the game's final nine goals to earn a come-from-behind 14-7 non-conference win over Saint Michael's College on Monday afternoon at Rollins College's Showalter Field.
UNH remains unbeaten this season at 3-0 following the victory, which saw Ashley and Mallory Ferrandiz, Brigid Brady and Sarah LeGoff all tally two second-half goals to lead the comeback. Brianna Kenworthy scored the other second-half goal as the Chargers erased a 7-5 halftime deficit by scoring the game's final nine goals.
Ashley Ferrandiz (photo), a freshman who was named East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday, led all players with four goals in the game. LeGoff and Brady scored three times each, while Mallory Ferrandiz and Kenworthy each had a pair of goals. Heather Miles added two assists.
Saint Michael's (1-1), a future Northeast-10 Conference opponent for UNH, got three goals and one assist from Brynne Curran and two goals from Amanda Pelley.
After Curran scored the game's opening goal just 18 seconds into the contest, UNH stormed back with four unanswered tallies to take the lead with just under 20 minutes left in the half.
But Saint Michael's rallied with six of the game's next seven goals as they closed out the period with a 7-5 lead. Pelley scored the period's final goal with 4:13 remaining, sandwiching her two goals around Curren's second score to close out the half.
But the second half was all UNH as the Chargers dominated the period 9-0. LeGoff got an unassisted score just over five minutes into the period, and Ashley Ferrandiz scored both the game-tying and go-ahead goals back-to-back just 38 seconds apart from one another. Her unassisted shot with 6:58 gone by in the second half was the go-ahead score and was her fourth and final goal of the game.
From there, older sister Mallory scored twice in a row less than a minute apart, and Brady scored twice around single goals from Kenworthy and LeGoff.
UNH out-shot Saint Michael's 15-3 in the second half and 28-16 overall. Charger goalkeeper Shannon Kilburn went the distance, making six saves in net for her first victory of the season.
The game was the culmination of the Chargers' spring trip to Florida. They return to the Northeast to open ECC play this Saturday afternoon at Molloy College.
