KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The University of New Haven softball team dropped a pair of games at the Rebel Spring Games on Saturday. The Chargers fell to Ferris State in their season opener, 8-0, and later saw University of South Dakota score four runs in the top of the seventh in a 6-3 loss.
GAME ONE - Ferris State 8, UNH 0
Holly Bruntjens fired a four-hit shutout through six innings, striking out three to pick up the win for Ferris State (7-7). UNH dropped its season opener.
Colleen Roney drove in a pair of runs, and four other players had one RBI each for the Bulldogs.
The Chargers got just four singles, one apiece from Meg Brown, Meghan Walter, Nicole Downs and Jordanna Borska.
Ferris State got four runs in the second inning, batting around and getting three walks, a hit-by-pitch, a single and a sac fly.
In the third, Ferris State added three more runs, on RBI hits by Rhea Flores and Roney.
GAME TWO - South Dakota 6, UNH 3
South Dakota (2-3) scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning, breaking a 2-2 tie to carry USD to a 6-3 victory over UNH (0-2).
Cortney Heim improves to 2-1 this season with the victory, giving up three unearned runs in seven innings while striking out six.
Mel Johnson drove in a pair of runs on a single in the seventh inning, part of a four-run inning that broke apart a tie game. Tagney Jones had singled in the go-ahead run through the right side, and Brittany Donohue made it 4-2 on a single down the third base line. Johnson's single through the left side put USD ahead by four heading to the Chargers' last at-bats.
UNH was able to get one run in the bottom of the seventh, on a fielder's choice grounder by Breanne Gleason. But with two away, Nicole Downs doubled into right field, and Gleason was thrown out trying to score to end the game.
UNH pitcher Meg Brown struck out 13 in a complete-game effort, but gave up eight hits and seven walks, leading to six runs.
