WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Mallory Ferrandiz had five goals and freshman Carolina Marrero (photo) had three to lead the University of New Haven women's lacrosse team to a 17-8 non-conference win over Rollins College on Saturday night.
Brianna Kenworthy also added three goals for UNH (2-0), which got a pair of goals from Ashley Ferrandiz and Brigid Brady. Kristine Lambracht and Sarah LeGoff added a goal apiece.
Just over one minute into the match, Mallory Ferrandiz opened the scoring with a free position goal. Rollins College attacker Annie Harris leveled the score at one apeice with an unassisted goal three minutes later.
Breaking the deadlock and putting the Chargers ahead 2-1 was an Ashley Ferrandiz goal at the 5:44 mark. Following Ferrandiz's goal, UNH would not surrender their lead for the rest of the evening. Extending the gap was Brady, Kenworthy and Marrero who each scored early in the first half to build the Charger lead to 5-1.
Rollins attempted to get back into the match with three goals in a four minute span during the first half, but UNH roared back with six unanswered goals, including two from freshman attacker Carolina Marrero to lead the Chargers to a 12-4 advantage early into the second half.
Mallory Ferrandiz started off that second frame just as she did the first by scoring the first of her four second half goals at the 3:25 mark. After putting the Chargers ahead 10-4, UNH proceded to close out the match comfortably en route to their second consecutive victory.
Brianna Kenworthy added two goals in the final minutes to secure a 17-8 win for the Chargers.
UNH has now scored 22 and 17 goals in their first two games, respectively. The Chargers outshot Rollins by a 37-15 margin including a 23-6 difference in the first half.
Rollins (3-6) was led by a three-goal performance by Annie Decker. Courtney Bianculli and Annie Harris scored twice each.
UNH continues non-conference play on their Florida trip on Monday afternoon, playing Saint Michael's College at Rollins.
