PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- Pace University scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning and made the lead hold in a 3-2 non-conference baseball win over University of New Haven at Finnerty Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Pace (6-1) was able to make a one-run lead stand up over the final 4 2/3 innings, as pitchers Dustin Corbett and Frank Luongo combined to retire 13 of the final 14 batters for UNH (0-8).
Corbett allowed two runs on six hits and a walk in 6 2/3 innings of work to pick up his first victory of the season, while Luongo logged his first save with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Dan Blake kept UNH in the game with 5 1/3 innings of perfect and scoreless relief, striking out seven batters. Starter Vince Lehman had allowed three runs in the first 1 2/3 innings, with Joe Barracato driving in one on a triple and Vinny Dammann and Andre Liscinsky plating the others on singles to right field.
Corbett allowed two runs to the Chargers in the top of the fifth, with Nick Sperounis (photo) driving in both on a single to right field. But Corbett recovered to induce a pair of fielder's choice grounders to get away from the inning with a slim 3-2 lead.
Corbett retired the side in the sixth, and then allowed a leadoff single to Chad Lemos in the seventh. After a sac bunt and a flyout to center, he was lifted for Luongo, who got out of the inning with a fly out to center.
Luongo closed out the save by retiring the side in both the eighth and ninth innings, shutting down the Chargers' 1-6 hitters.
UNH, which has played all of its games on the road so far this season, finally opens play at Vieira Field at noon on both Saturday and Sunday, March 15-16. The Chargers host Saint Anselm College and Merrimack, respectively, with the two future NE-10 opponents playing one another in the second game of doubleheaders both days.
