NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Mallory Ferrandiz tied the school's single-game record with 8 points, and combined with sister Ashley to record 13 points as the University of New Haven women's lacrosse team took a season-opening 22-8 non-conference decision over Southern Connecticut State University at Jess Dow Field on Wednesday afternoon.

UNH (1-0) had five different players score at least three goals, led by junior Brigid Brady's game-high five.  Both Ferrandiz sisters scored three goals, with Mallory, a junior, leading all players with eight points.  She added five assists, and her eight points tied her own school single-game mark.

Ashley Ferrandiz, a freshman, had three goals and two assists. Kristine Lambracht and Sarah LeGoff also added three goals apiece for the Chargers, while Brianna Kenworthy scored twice.

Southern Connecticut (0-2) got five of its eight goals from Allison Kownacki.  Jessica Kraszewski, Nicole Calcaterra and Rachel Carlucci scored once each.

UNH led wire-to-wire, but the game was tight through the first period.  UNH held a 10-6 advantage at halftime behind three goals from Brady and two apiece from the Ferrandiz sisters and Lambracht.

The Chargers blew the game open in the second half, scoring the period's first five goals to take a 15-6 lead.  After Kraszewski scored for SCSU to make it 15-7, UNH got seven goals in a row over a 17-minute span.  Brady, the school's career leading scorer, closed out the UNH scoring with an unassisted tally with just under five minutes left.

Of note, Ashley Ferrandiz scored her first collegiate point on the first goal of the season for the Chargers.  She assisted on a goal by Kenworthy just 1:10 into the contest.  She got her first collegiate goal with 18:37 gone by in the first period.

Mallory Ferrandiz and Heather Miles were both making their returns from season-ending knee injuries that limited them to a combined seven games last year.  Miles scored twice off the bench for the Chargers.  Defensively, Shannon Greenwood made five saves while playing all 60 minutes between the pipes for UNH.

The Chargers continue their season in Florida this weekend, playing at Rollins College on Saturday, March 15.  They play Saint Michael's College in Winter Park, Fla., on Monday the 17th.
