WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Nate Stott led all players with 11 kills on .316 hitting, and Rutgers-Newark hit .302 as a team in a 3-0 Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association sweep of University of New Haven on Tuesday night at Charger Gymnasium.
Stott added three service aces and John Keller had nine kills and four block assists as Rutgers improved to 6-12 overall and 4-4 in the EIVA's Hay Division. Kenneth Stumbaugh had four kills and a match-high six block assists in the victory.
UNH (9-9, 0-5 EIVA Hay) was led by eight kills apiece from Matthew Soderstrom and Chris Lennon, who added 11 assists. Austin Michalski had 12 assists, while Tommy Musto had six kills and six digs.
In the first game, Nick Johnson had four kills on five swings to lead Rutgers to a 30-19 victory. Rutgers led 9-6 but went on a 7-2 run to take control. UNH got back to within six at 18-12, but another 7-2 run made it 25-15 and Rutgers was firmly in control.
UNH's best chance came in game two, when the Chargers led many of the late points. UNH had a game point at 30-29 after a Rutgers attack error. But Stumbaugh killed a ball to re-tie the contest. UNH then staved off one game point, making it 31-31, but UNH committed a service error and an attack error to make it a 33-31 win for the Raiders.
Game three started tight, and was tied for the final time at 9-9. But Kenny Rienecker had three kills as Rutgers went on a 12-6 run to take control at 21-15, forcing a UNH timeout. UNH got to within one point, 28-27 after an attack error, and again at 29-28 after a Rutgers service error. But Rienecker killed a pass from Jeff Zornig to end the match.
UNH hosts Division III's third-ranked team, NYU, this Thursday in EIVA play beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Charger Gymnasium.
