CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. -- Tetrick Stonar and Lauren Hood both earned First Team All-East Coast Conference honors as the conference announced the men's and women's basketball post-season awards on Wednesday night prior to the ECC Championship quarterfinal round games. Briiana Rende was a women's Second Team All-ECC selection for UNH, while Cassius Chaney took home Third Team accolades on the men's side.
Women's Basketball
Lauren Hood earned her first-ever all-conference honors after being selected First Team All-ECC for 2008. Hood was one of the league leaders in a number of categories and took control in her junior season to help guide UNH to a 19-1 record in ECC play. She led the Chargers in scoring and finished the regular season 7th in the league at 15.4 points per game. She ranked 5th in the ECC in field goal percentage (.491), and 11th in free throw percentage (.738).
Perhaps most notably, Hood poured in numbers that put her in the conversation for Player of the Year while playing just 23.1 minutes per game on a deep team. Still, she scored in double figures in 20 of 25 games, including a career-best and ECC-leading 37-point effort at home vs. Mercy in her second game of the season. She went over 20 points seven times during the year.
Briiana Rende earned Second Team All-ECC honors for the second season in a row after ranking second on UNH in scoring at 9.9 points per game. She knocked down a team-leading 34 three-pointers and converted 83.3 percent of her free throws this season - leading the ECC.
Rende scored in double figures ten times, including a career-best 23-point effort in a win at Mercy. She also scored 20 on two other occasions, and knocked down multiple 3-pointers in seven different games. She was 27th in the ECC in scoring, 5th in three-point percentage, and 13th in 3-pointers made.
Men's Basketball
Tetrick Stonar earned his first-ever all-conference honors with an election to the First Team All-ECC squad for his efforts in 2008. Stonar was the catalyst all season long for a much-improved UNH team, leading the club in scoring at 19.1 points per game. That mark ranked him third among all ECC players, and he also ranked third in scoring during ECC play.
Stonar also ranked 13th in the ECC in assists per game (2.63), was fifth in free throw percentage (.805), ninth in steals (1.81/gm), ninth in 3-pointers made (1.70/gm), and 12th in minutes per game.
He scored in double figures in 25 of 27 games, and went over the 20-point mark 15 times, including a career-best 27 points on three occasions. He went over the 1,000-point mark for his career as well this season.
Chaney, who was a Second Team All-ECC selection as a freshman last season, has already scored over 900 points in his career and was second on UNH in scoring this season at 14.8 points per game (9th in the ECC). He led the Chargers with 8.2 rebounds per game, a mark good for second in the ECC, and he was seventh in offensive rebounds in the league.
Chaney scored in double figures in 24 of 27 contests, and went over the 20-point mark six times - including a career-high 31 points in a win over Molloy. He posted a career-high 10 double-doubles this season, the second-best total among all players in the ECC.
