NEW YORK -- Shannon Gagne (photo) and Melissa Tempesta both established new school records, and Gagne provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the long jump, as the University of New Haven indoor track teams competed at the Lafayette-Rider Winter Games at the NYC Armory Friday night.
Gagne will now be considered in a pool of candidates for the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track Championships, with her distance matching up against automatic qualifiers and other provisional qualifiers.
On the men's side, Richard Wyche and James Beaubrun both qualified for the New England Collegiate Championships (Feb. 29 to March 1).
The Chargers switched into this meet just last week, competing at the Armory's high-competitive banked track instead of having an open weekend. UNH will instead take off next weekend to rest for New England's.
Women's Results
Gagne was third overall in the long jump, placing behind only competitors from Division I programs Penn and Delaware. She went a school-record distance of 5.52 meters (18 feet, 1 inch).
Tempesta was 25th overall and second in heat five in the 800-meter run, establishing a new school record with a time of 2:25.76.
Alissa von Schmidt was 36th overall in the same heat in that race, running 2:29.03. Ashleigh Scott was 48th in a time of 2:37.40.
In the 1,000-meter run, Ashley Hardy narrowly missed a school record, running a personal-best 3:13.74 to finish 11th overall, behind nine Division I competitors.
Men's Recap
Beaubrun and Wyche both posted times that qualify them to run at the New England Collegiate Championships later this month and early March.
Beaubrun ran 1:56.57 in the third heat of the 800-meter run, finishing in 20th place overall and as the second-fastest Division II runner.
And Wyche qualified for New England's in the 400-meter dash, running 50.21 seconds. He was second in heat No. 2, and 12th overall.
