CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The UNH men's volleyball team went 3-1 over the weeknd in route to a third-place finish at the Massachushetts Institute of Technology Men's Volleyball Invitational. Senior Chris Lennon (photo) lead the Chargers with his third triple-double (21 kills, 16 assists, and 11 digs) of the season in the third place win over Emmanuel College on Sunday. Lennon's effort over the two-day tournament netted him a spot on the all-tournament team.
In the championship game nationally-ranked No. 12 Ramapo College defeated No. 11 MIT, 30-25, 26-30, 30-25, 34-32. The Roadrunners became the second team in the tournament's history to claim the crown in its first appearance as Emmanuel College accomplished this feat in 2006.
The Chargers get back on the court Wednesday night as they host Newbury College at 7:00 p.m. in West Haven. On Friday, February 15, UNH opens its EIVA conference schedule as nationally-ranked No. 2 Springfield College comes to Charger Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. match.
Saturday, February 9
Match #1:
The Chargers jumped out early on the Dolphins of Mount St. Vincent on the way to a 3-0 (30-12, 30-25, 30-20) victory. Chris Lennon continued his to play well as he lead the Chargers with 11 kills and 21 assists. Lennon also added 4 digs. Senior Drew Kirkeby had 10 kills to add to the Charger offense. Austin Michalski also played well in the match one win as he recorded 16 assists, along with 5 kills, blocks and digs. Sophomore John Sedlock also contributed to the win with a team-high 11 digs.
Match #2:
In the second match of the day the Chargers dropped three straight to No. 11 MIT by scores of 20-30, 24-30, 26-30. Once again senior Chris Lennon led the way for UNH as he had 17 kills, 16 assists, and 8 digs in the losing effort. Austin Michalski added a team-high 25 assists with four kills and four blocks. Teammates Tommy Musto had 12 digs and added 4 kills as fellow senior Drew Kirkeby had 10 kills and 2 solo blocks.
Sunday, February 10
Match #3:
UNH improved to 2-1 at the MIT Tournament and to 5-2 overall as the Chargers dropped Mount Ida College 3-0 (30-20, 30-25, 30-12). It was a total team effort as nine Chargers got court time in the 3-game win over the Mustangs. Matt Soderstrom and Chris Lennon led the way with 7 kills. Soderstrom also added 4 service aces, 4 digs and 3 blocks. Lennon again had double-digit assists with 15, along with 4 digs and 3 blocks. Every Charger that played collected at least one kill with Ryan Sterling (5), Brian Parmelee (4), Gregg Brisbin (3), Julian du Pont (3), Austin Michalski (2), Peter Kazlas (2) and John Sedlock (1) to round out the lineup. Michalski once again led UNH with 17 assists and Sedlock had a team-high 14 digs.
Third-Place Match:
The Chargers ended their trip to MIT with a third place finish with a win over Emmanuel College by scores of 31-29, 25-30, 30-20, 30-28. The win moves the Chargers to 6-2 overall. Senior Chris Lennon had his third triple-double of the season as he collected 21 kills, 13 assists, and 11 digs. Drew Kirkeby had double-figures in kills with 12 and also added 2 digs. Matt Soderstrom played big at the net, registering 8 kills and 7 blocks. Austin Michalski lead the Chargers in assists for the third straight match as he had a career-high 33 assists. Michalski also added 5 kills, 7 digs and 3 blocks. Tommy Musto contributed to the win with 7 kills, 2 service aces and 10 digs. Libero John Sedlock also added 10 digs.
