BOSTON, Mass.-- The indoor track teams traveled to Boston for the Valentine Invitational on Friday and Saturday. More than 50 schools competed at the event, hosted by Boston University, including local Divsion I schools University of Connecticut and Yale University.
Sophomore Shannon Gagne (photo) continued her superb indoor season at the event, leading the Chargers in three different events on Friday.
In the 55-meter dash Gagne finished in a 7.52 seconds, good for 26th place, but excluding Division I competition finished behind only twelve other competitors. Gagne also finished strong in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.78 seconds. Again, excluding Division I competition, Gagne finished in 10th place, and 26th overall.
The long jump is where Gagne has made her biggest impact for the Chargers so far this season and Friday was no exception as she landed a distance of 5.15 meters, good for an 11th place tie. Not including Division I competitors, Gagne finished behind only Gillian Mundry of UMass-Lowell and Kristen Tricocci of TCNJ.
Senior Alissa Von Schmidt and freshman Melissa Tempesta turned in nearly indentical times of 2:27:42 and 2:27.13 respectively in the 800-meter run. Junior Ashley Hardy was not far behind with a result of 2:35.12 in the same event.
On the men's side James Beaubrun led UNH with a 63rd place finish in the 800-meter dash in a time of 1:57.35. Excluding Division I competition, Beaubrun's finish was good for 45th.
Also competing in the 800-meter event for the Chargers were Pat Leach (2:00.65), David Chiapperino (2:04.04) and Brandon Fitzgerald (2:05.74).
After a week off from competition, UNH continues their indoor schedule on February 23rd at the Princeton Invitational. It will be the final meet prior to the New England Championships which will be held the following weekend.
