WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Chris Lennon (photo) had a triple-double with 22 kills, 25 assists and 11 digs, and Drew Kirkeby logged 21 kills as the University of New Haven men's volleyball team took a 3-2 decision over Lasell College in the season opener at Charger Gymnasium Tuesday night.
Kirkeby killed his 21 balls on .368 hitting, while Lennon had a match-high 28 points on 22 kills, four service aces and four blocks as UNH won their season opener by scores of 31-33, 30-23, 30-28, 24-30, 15-8. The triple-double was the first of Lennon's career, as he split the setting duties with Austin Michalski (31 assists, six digs).
Both Lennon and Kirkeby missed the latter part of last season with injuries but were strong in their comebacks.
UNH out-blocked Lasell (3-1) by a 17-5 margin, with graduate student transfer Matthew Soderstrom leading the way for the Chargers with 11 total blocks (3 solo, 8 assisted).
Lasell was led by 14 kills from Dan Rogers, who hit .367 in the match, while Andy Cass posted a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Setter Gary Gay had 42 assists.
The match featured 21 ties and 16 lead changes as Lasell won the opening game but UNH rebounded to take the next two. Lasell won the fourth game to force overtime, but UNH jumped out to an overwhelming 8-2 advantage in the fifth to win the match.
UNH continues non-conference play at home this Thursday, January 31, when they host Endicott College beginning at 7:00 p.m.
