NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The University of New Haven men's and women's indoor track teams began their seasons at Coxe Cage on Saturday afternoon at the 2007 Yale Season Opener.
It was the first indoor meet for the Chargers under new head coach Kevin LaSure, who took the reigns of the program this fall.
"We got great performances from our men's and women's 4x800 relay teams," LaSure said. "Key performances included Richard Wyche in the 400, Shannon Gagne in the long jump and 60-meter dash, and Angel Colandrea in the 60-meter hurdles."
MEN'S RECAP
Wyche finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.01 seconds, behind a pair of Division I competitors. It was one of a number of top-10 finishes the Chargers' men's team posted on the day.
The 4x800-meter relay was third in 8:20.69, while the 4x400 relay was sixth in a time of 3:32.68.
James Beaubrun finished fifth in the 1,000-meter run in a time of 2:35.30. David Chiapperino was eighth in the same event in 2:40.87.
Joe Galvin was ninth in the 500-meter run in a time of 1:14.59. Pat Leach was eighth in the 800 at 2:00.09.
WOMEN'S RECAP
Gagne was third in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.28 meters. Gagne was fifth in the 60-meter preliminaries, running 8.05 seconds, and ended in the same place after an 8.10 in the finals.
Colandrea placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.73 seconds during the preliminary round, then ended up fourth overall after running 9.91 in the finals.
Melissa Tempesta was ninth in the 1,000-meter run in a time of 3:13.16, followed closely by Alissa von Schmidt in 10th at 3:15.62.
Hollie Kennedy finished 10th in the mile run, and also finished 10th in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:45.98.
The 4x800-meter relay team finished second.
