OAKDALE, N.Y. -- Junior goalkeeper James Hilaire made 15 saves to help the University of New Haven play No. 7 Dowling College to a scoreless draw in East Coast Conference men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon.
Hilaire picked up his fifth shutout of the season while playing 110 scoreless minutes between the pipes for UNH, which improves to 5-8-1 overall and 3-3-1 in ECC play.
The Chargers were able to preserve the tie despite playing the final 18 minutes, four seconds down a man after a red card at 101:56 of the match.
Dowling, the defending NCAA Division II champion, remained unbeaten in ECC play at 4-0-3 and retains possession of first place in the league standings. They are 10-2-3 overall and were ranked seventh nationally in Tuesday's NSCAA/adidas coaches' poll.
The Golden Lions out-shot UNH by a 40-9 margin and had 11 corner kicks to just two for the Chargers, but Hilaire made several stops to keep his team in the match.
UNH hosts ECC foe Queens College this Saturday, October 20 at Kayo Field beginning at 1:00 p.m. The team is down to its final three matches of the regular season, including two more in ECC play that will determine their postseason fate.
