NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior forward Shane Ogilvie scored a tie-breaking goal with 6:25 remaining in regulation to lead the Southern Connecticut State University men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over University of New Haven in non-conference action at Jess Dow Field on Tuesday night.

SCSU’s fourth consecutive victory increased their unbeaten streak to seven games and improved their record to 9-2-3. UNH had a three-match winning streak snapped with the loss and falls to 5-8-0 overall.

UNH opened the scoring just 2:21 into the second half. Four Chargers huddled around the ball on a free kick about 30 yards from the goal line on the left side of the field. Jelani Joslyn poked the ball between the legs of freshman Nick Pezzente. On the other side of Pezzente, Jessey Fernandez (photo) took one touch and struck the ball. His shot narrowly eluded the grasp of SCSU senior goalkeeper Brendan Lawless, bouncing off the left goal post and rolling across the line to give Fernandez his sixth goal this season and UNH a 1-0 lead.

The Owls would strike for the equalizer just 3:38 later. Junior midfielder Djordje Jankovic served up his team-leading seventh assist of the season when he hit a corner kick from the right side. The ball found junior defender Ancil Farrier inside the six-yard box in front of the New Haven net. Farrier struck the ball home for his fifth goal of the season.

Ogilvie would then notch the game-winner amidst a scramble in front of the net in the 84th minute. Freshman midfielder Brandin McClay recorded the assist on Ogilvie’s fifth goal of the season.

The two clubs played a scoreless first half with SCSU controlling much of the play. The Owls held a 9-5 shots advantage and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks over the opening 45 minutes. The two teams came out of the gate playing hard, as they combined for 15 fouls in the first half.

James Hilaire made five saves for the Chargers in defeat. UNH now has seven days off to prepare for their next ECC match on the 16th at Dowling.
