ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. -- Molloy College won its men's soccer East Coast Conference opener on Saturday by scoring five goals in a shutout of University of New Haven.
Molloy (6-1-1, 1-0-0 ECC) scored twice in the first period and three times in rapid succession in the second half on a rain-soaked field. The loss snapped a two-match win streak for UNH and dropped the Chargers to 2-5-0 overall and 1-1-0 in ECC play. UNH had won back-to-back 1-0 contests heading into Saturday.
Molloy took a 1-0 lead just 5:53 into the contest when Shane Blanchard scored one of his three goals on the afternoon. He would follow up with his second goal in the 27th minute, and added a third at 65:31 in the second half.
Blanchard's third goal was the second of three in rapid succession in the second half that put the game out of reach for UNH. Nick D'Alessandro started the string at 64:48, with Blanchard following less than a minute later and William Bell capping off the spurt with a successful penalty kick at 67:48.
UNH actually out-shot Molloy, 11-10, but the Lions converted half of their shot attempts while goalkeeper Russ Francome kept the Chargers off the board with four saves.
The Chargers look to rebound when they play their first game on Kayo Field this Wednesday, Sept. 26 against Mercy College.
