WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Junior Jessey Fernandez scored just 3:36 into the contest and the defense clamped down for their second shutout in a row as the University of New Haven men's soccer team defeated Concordia College, 1-0, on Tuesday.

It was the East Coast Conference opener for both teams and possibly the last men's game played at Dodds Stadium. UNH (2-4, 1-0 ECC) will open the newly-resurfaced artificial turf Kayo Field this Saturday when the Charger women play Georgian Court University.

Fernandez struck the game winner for the Chargers just 3:36 into the contest, hitting the ball from the top left of the box into the upper right corner of the goal.

It was Fernandez's second goal of the season - both coming in the last two contests to give UNH back-to-back 1-0 wins.

Charger goalkeeper James Hilaire made five saves to keep Concordia (1-6, 0-1 ECC) off the board and stretch his shutout streak to 195 minutes, 9 seconds.

The Clippers out-shot UNH 15-11, but the Chargers seemed to have the better chances as many of the Concordia shots were high or wide of goal.

"I thought we had some chances that we didn't finish that could have given us more breathing room," said UNH head coach Joshua Krusewski. "We just need to finish those chances so we don't keep the door open for teams. We're improving and we'll carry this into Saturday's match and should be competitive at Molloy."

In the second half, Concordia goalkeeper Ivan Rodriguez made two nice diving saves to punch away certain goals headed for the upper right corner, and UNH's Alex Hubbard had a memorable chance in front but couldn't connect on the bouncing ball to the left of the box.

The Chargers' men's team continues ECC play this Saturday, Sept. 22 when they travel to Molloy College for a 2:00 p.m. game. They'll make their debut on Kayo Field on Wednesday, Sept. 26 when they host Mercy in an ECC match.
