WATERBURY, Conn.— Junior Jessey Fernandez (photo) scored a goal in the 85th minute, lifting the University of New Haven men's soccer team over Post University, 1-0, in a rainy non-conference match at LaMoy Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The first goal of the season for UNH (1-4) lifted the Chargers to their first victory - not only of the season, but also in the career of head coach Joshua Krusewski. Fernandez ripped a shot from just inside the top left hand corner of the 18-yard box, putting it past goalkeeper Marco Gaspar for the game-winning goal at 84:14 in the second half.
"We played probably our best half of attacking soccer of the season in the second period," said Krusewski. "It resulted in a goal and then James Hilaire makes two great saves to preserve the win."
Hilaire kept the Eagles off the board by recording nine saves, including six in the first half to earn the win. Gaspar made six saves for Post (0-5), which outshot the Chargers 19-13 overall.
"The pressure to win the first game of the season is over with," Krusewski said. "Now we have a week to clean things up."
The Chargers do not play again until they open East Coast Conference play by hosting Concordia College on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
