Gary Zavatkay rates as one of the best power and run-producing hitters in UNH baseball history. He ranks seventh in career home runs (19) and sixth in career RBIs (126). He batted over .300 in three of his four seasons, including a career high .367 as a freshman. With a great eye for the strike zone, he walked 75 times, the third highest total in UNH history. His 42 RBIs in 1982 and his 145 career hits give him a prominent place in the University’s records book. Zavatkay was named All-Region and All-New England Collegiate Conference in 1983. His courage and strength were demonstrated most profoundly when in the first game of a double header, he left the field to receive more than 21 stitches as a result of an injury, only to return to the field for the entire second game. After graduation, Zavatkay went on to a successful career in women’s collegiate basketball officiating.
