Outfielder
(1975-76 & 1977-78)
Inducted 1994
Young spent three seasons in a University of New Haven uniform, helping the Chargers earn three NCAA tournament bids. He played in practically every game during his stay, appearing in 105 of 106 games played by the team. Young was known for his all-around ability, ranking among the team leaders in batting, fielding and stolen bases. The outfielder batted over .300 in two of his three seasons but it was his junior year which caught the attention of professional scouts. In 1978, Young recorded career-highs in runs, hits, RBI, doubles, triples and home runs. He finished that campaign with a .384 batting average, six home runs, 33 RBI, eight doubles and five triples. In the field, Young's reputation for throwing out base runners kept the opposition honest and prevented runners from taking an extra base. He ended his three-year career with a .328 batting average, 10 home runs, 78 RBI and 120 base hits. Young signed a professional contract with the Boston Red Sox following his junior season.
