Henry Spellman

Track
(1976-80)

Inducted 1988

One of the most prolific jumpers in New England history, Henry Spellman set several records in the long and triple jump events that should stand for quite awhile.  A consistent performer, Spellman was well known around the track circles as an athlete who knew what it took to win.  Even under the adverse conditions which are a part of the hazards of outdoor competition, nothing would faze him and he would turn in a winning performance.  Garnering honor after honor over his four years, Henry’s name may be permanently etched in the Charger record book.  Named to nearly every conference team, including the Tri-State, All-Eastern Intercollegiate and All-Collegiate Track conference teams, Henry also earned All-New England honors his final two seasons under Coach Bob Deobil.  Indeed, Henry literally jumped into the record books not only at New Haven but also at several major track meets, where he was up against the best competition in the Northeast.  Both on the track and off, Henry depicted the typical New Haven athlete, a true winner.
