Scott Rahl

Baseball
Catcher
(1969-72)

Inducted 1987

For three seasons, Scott Rahl was Frank Vieira’s catalyst behind the plate as he helped the pitching staff to an incredible 80-15 record.  The Mystic, Connecticut native also had an accurate gun, which made the opponent think twice out on the bases.  He moved to first base his senior season due to injury, but that didn’t hurt his production with the bat nor stop the New York Yankees from drafting him in June of 1972.  While on the field, the Chargers compiled an outstanding 104-22 record and competed in two National Championships.  In his freshman season he hit .476 as he helped the Chargers to a fourth place finish in the NAIA National Championships and in 1972, he paced the team with a .321 average for the second place team in the Northeast Regionals.  A steady and consistent hitter for coach Vieira, he cranked out a .338 career batting average, which places him among the all-time leaders.  Scott also rapped out 20 doubles and 100 career RBI. The Second Team All-American also had a good eye on the play, as he struck out just 51 times in 399 trips.  With his big bat and uncanny ability to control the pitching staff, Scott Rahl was one of the finest catchers to ever don a Charger uniform.
