Mike Raczka was one of the best lefthanded pitchers in school history. He set the school record with 312 career strikeouts. He earned All-America status in both 1982 and 1984 in addition to receiving All-Region honors in 1983 and All-Conference honors in 1984. He dominated opposing hitters as his listing in seven single-season and career records prove. Raczka ranks third in career innings pitched with 325.1, fourth in career appearances with 55 and sixth in career wins with 29. His 145 strikeouts in 1984 were just one shy of the single season record of 146 set in 1971. In the 13 seasons since Raczka posted 145 strikeouts, only one other University of New Haven pitcher has posted more than 130 strikeouts in a season. He also ranks tenth in wins in a season and seventh in innings pitched after posting 11 wins and 115.1 innings in 1984. Raczka, who was the 1984 UNH Male Athlete of the Year, went on to sign a professional baseball contract with the Oakland A’s and became the ninth Charger to appear in a major league game.
