Robert Powers was one of the baseball team’s big guns during the early 70’s. The 5’8 right-hander was quite the intimidator out on the mound with his compact release that allowed him to rack up 211 strikeouts during his four year career. Used as both a starter and as a reliever, he compiled a 30-8-8 record and an incredible 1.93 ERA while completing all but 12 of 35 games he started. A workhorse out on the mound for coach Frank Vieira, he received the starting nod for the most games during the ‘74 and ’75 seasons as he posted a combined 18-5-5 record. The talented hurler, using a sharp breaking slider as his main weapon, was undefeated as a sophomore with a 5-0 record as he helped the team to a 5th place 1973 finish in the Nationals. Bob was also a key part of the Charger team that made its first ever College World Series appearance in 1972. Indeed, when Bobby Powers was in the game, the Charger coaching staff may have relaxed just a bit as they knew they had one of the premier pitchers in New England out on the mound.
