Brian Nugent was a four-year starter for the Chargers, spending all four seasons as a linebacker. Nugent played both on offense and defense as a rookie before settling in as a full-time linebacker during his final three years. Nugent was a hard-nosed player who always was around the football, resulting in team-high totals in tackles twice in his career. He was also among the team leaders in interceptions, picking off a least one pass in each of his four years. Nugent earned All-New England Football Conference honors three times and received a spot on United Press International's College Division All-New England Football team as a senior. In his senior season, Nugent was one of the football team's tri-captains and was the team's top tackler, averaging better than 12 stops per contest. Nugent's teammates realized his contribution to the team by giving the linebacker back-to back most valuable player honors. The Charger Bulletin, the student newspaper, selected Nugent as the school's Male Athlete of the Year for the 1979-80 season. Nugent continued with the Chargers as an assistant coach upon his graduation.
