Geraldine Mattaur was one of the most versatile athletes to play volleyball at the University of New Haven. Her soft touch enabled her to set up a teammate while her own shot was one of the most devastating on the team. A four-year starter, Mattaur capped her brillant career by becoming the first New Haven volleyball player to be named an All-American. Mattaur earned a spot on the AVAC Division II All-America second team in her senior year, the same year the Chargers made their first appearance in the Division II National Quarterfinals. She helped the Chargers defeat Northeastern in the first round of the NCAA’s, a 3-1 win. In her All-American year, Mattaur owned a .297 hitting percentage with 300 kills, 19 block solos, 172 block assists, and five service aces. She also registered 1,077 assists and 211 digs during her All- American season. In addition to leading the Chargers to the NCAA tournament, Mattaur guided New Haven to its first two New England Collegiate Conference Championships. She received All-NECC first team honors in 1983 and 1984 and was named the Conference Most Valuable Player in 1984.
