Don Ormrod called Jack Kelly “another coach” during his prolific playing days under the first Charger head coach. Kelly, a native of New Haven, actually came to Ormrod though a recommendation of a scouting friend, and the dividends soon payed off. Kelly was a smooth ball handler who always remained in complete composure. Whether he was running a play in front of a packed New Haven Arena or in the final seconds of a big tournament game, Kelly kept his cool. He averaged 12.7 points in limited action his freshman season, which was also the first varsity basketball year on this campus. He closed out his career shooting 73% from the line, 47% from the floor. Working with some of the greatest talent in New England basketball history (in his first three seasons, New Haven was 55-13), Jack Kelly may have been overlooked by some fans, but he was never overlooked by his coaches or teammates.
