To call Richard Hildebrand one of the original hockey greats wouldn’t be an overstatement as the talented, hard skating forward did it all for the Chargers. The West Haven, Connecticut native made an immediate impact for the Blue and Gold in his freshman season when he scored a team high 36 goals and 42 assists for a phenomenal 78 points. That season, the Chargers skated to a 13-3 record and his contribution still stands in the record books. Although feared around the league as a dangerous goal producer, he was also known as an unselfish player by his teammates as he led the team for two seasons in assists. Along with his two seasons as the Chargers’ leading scorer, he ended his career as the team’s all-time point leader with 194. Hildebrand was not only a prolific scorer for the Chargers, but he was also in complete control out on the ice as he logged a mere 52 minutes in the penalty box in 57 games for coach Jim Fanning. This mark places him second on the all-time list for fewest penalties. Richard Hildebrand will always be remembered for his outstanding contributions to the success of the UNH hockey program.
