If you were to list the greatest power hitters to play at the University of New Haven, Tom Grant’s name would be at the top of the list. Grant stroked 26 home runs during his career, the third-best total in the school’s history. He recorded 13 home runs during the 1978 campaign, just missing the school record of 14 set in that same season by Hall of Famer Bob Turcio. One season later, Grant registered 16 doubles, the second best total in school history, and finished the year with 27 extra-base hits in 40 games. He also ranks among New Haven’s all-times leaders in base hits (144), doubles (37), and RBIs (136). In addition to his hitting abilities, Grant played the outfield as well as anyone ever has at New Haven. His strong, accurate arm ranked as one of the best in the program and enabled Grant to throw out many baserunners during his career. Following his senior season, Grant was signed by the Chicago Cubs and became one of eight former UNH players to appear in the major leagues.
