Golf
(1967-70)
Inducted 1988
There was a time when New Haven golf was the best in the Northeast and much of this success can be attributed to the play of Doug Grabowski. Consistently among the medalists in every match he played, Doug has the distinction of being named the only All-America Golf player at the University of New Haven. Prior to his All-America selection, Doug also made a name for himself in 1969 when he was a medalist at the prestigious Connecticut Collegiate Golf Championships. That same season, he won the year-end championship of the CCGC while also garnering the medalist honor at the NAIA National Championship. During his senior year, when the team went 18-1 under Coach Al Nicholson, the All-America helped his team to make its first ever NCAA tournament appearance, which was also the first for New Haven athletics. The talented golfer finished second at the nationals and then again competed in the NAIA’s, where he finished third. While at the NCAA’s, Doug also set a course record in the competition without a practice round. A natural athlete, Doug used both mind and body to excel as a Charger athlete.
